John grasped in the darkness for the source of the high-pitched tone piercing his ears. With a smack, he snoozed his tableside alarm clock and sat up in bed. After feeling around for his robe, John shuffled down the hall towards the kitchen.

            “Coffee,” he mumbled.

After the pot was done brewing, he poured a cup and went outside to sit on the porch. He was met with the scene of an overturned car in his front yard and the flashing lights of police cars surrounding it. John looked down at his cup.

“I’m gonna need more coffee,” he said.
