Charles scratched the last square on his lottery ticket, then tossed it to the side—another dud. With a heavy sigh, he put the quarter back in his pocket and left the convenience store.
“Bye, Tony!” he said as he walked out the door.
The wind cut deep, and he wrapped his coat a little closer.
“I just need a win today,” he said to himself.
As he headed to his car, he felt a vibration in his pocket. He pulled out his phone to a text from his wife.
“We’re having a girl,” is all it said.
He smiled.
